500 Miles + Swedish Meatballs

Overheard a conversation between my little ones today, while Mom prepared the chicken we were having for dinner. I say YUM, they say SWEDISH MEATBALLS!

So after running around the house screaming at each other. Nagging, playing, fighting, laughing – all at once – they finally found peace across each other in the sofa.

That’s when they started conspiring. Here’s a piece of what I heard them saying:

Ronja: – I don’t like dinner. I don’t want chicken. I want different dinner.
Hannah: – Do you want meatballs?
Ronja: – Yes. I want meatballs!
Hannah: – Me too!

They have been in Sweden for nearly three weeks now. I’ve been here for two weeks, but tomorrow we’re heading home! We’re all packed up and ready to roll, we just have to sleep some first. Driving early tomorrow morning, and it’ll be a silly day spent in the car. We’ll be driving 500 miles and I’ll be singing Hooters and Proclaimers all day. Can’t wait..

From A to B.

What I’ve learned about my kids while being here, I’ve learned a lot of things, but one of the things I’m bringing home with me are the Swedish National Kids Dish: Swedish meatballs with macaroni. My kids are craving for them every day, and although they’ve tasted meatballs before, they’ve never had them served with macaroni. And I also think the ones sold in stores here in southern Sweden tastes a lot better than the ones served at IKEA. I have to admit, it’s freaking delicious! And being a piece of cake preparing, I’ll be making this a lot! I just have to find those yummy meatballs some place where I live. We don’t live to far off the Swedish border, so I might “smuggle” some meatballs once in a while.

Here’s the recipe:

- Bunch of Swedish meatballs
- Bunch of macaroni
- Bunch of ketchup
- Eat

Easy? I’m cooking this with my eyes closed.

I found out every parent in Sweden are in love with this dish. If not them, their kids are. Because wherever we went I heard parents asking their kids if they wanted some. It’s plain and simple genius. Easy and tastes good. Don’t get any better than that. For me as a dad, and for my kids. They gonna love their dad for bringing this home.

Found this nice cross section of the IKEA Swedish Meatball. If you haven’t tried Swedish meatballs, I guess a good start would be at IKEA. And buy yourself a cheese slicer while you’re there, to supplement the existing ones you already have. I just can’t spew out free commercial for my neighbors without some Norwegian PR as well. I know you’ve sliced you’re cheese with this amazing Norwegian invention.

Have a good night!
